Words from Patrick:
I spent this weekend really looking closely again at this first chapter, in multiple ways. Last week Ian Pike, my lead editor, sent back his notes and we met for dinner and talked about the re-writes that needed to come in. eeek. draft 5 of the script! When I think of draft work I always remember the chapter in “Bird by Bird” by Anne Lamott “Shitty First Drafts” . That was the first way I started looking at this chapter this week, looking at accepting the need to chisel it to where it needed to be. The second way was that the last actual new pages of American BOOOM! that Alonso and I worked on were pages 1-3. I had added those pages about 3 months ago.
To give you a time frame, the comic started production last April. Alonso and I, started looking at the first 5 pages of my script and began working together then so that we could map out the collaborative process we were going to go through. To put that in perspective: page 4, the page with the border crossing and the close-up on Sarah’s eye was completed over 7 months ago. That was also the first time I had worked with GIMP for coloring. I had bought a new computer and promised myself, due to an ethical/moral stance, I was only going to work on open source and free graphic programs.
Easier said than done. 9 hours later I had completed the first page and I had a 200 page script to write. I was on page 80 of that, I had completed one page of art and I remember gulping and not believing we would make it to now. Today. This is first day where Alonso and I are working on what I am calling our “regular process”, where a page of art takes 2 weeks to complete. Yesterday I finished the first round of inks on page 10. I wrote the 5th draft of chapter 1 and I have 150 pages written of the script for American BOOOM.
Gulp again. The coolest thing though? It feels like I am actually making comics instead of talking about it for the first time in my life.
tell everyone you know!
